Bicycle Safety
Bicycle Safety is Everyone's Resonsibility
Each year in Tuscaloosa, dozens of cyclists are involved in accidents involving motor vehicles. These accidents can cause serious injury or death. We at the Tuscaloosa Police Department believe that Bicycle Safety is everone's responsibility.
Driver's Role
Driver's need to be mindful of cyclists and give them the same respect they would any other vehicle on the road. When encountering a cyclist, drive cautiously, reduce your speed and yield to bicyclists under appropriate conditions. Be considerate, watch for cyclists on the road and at intersections. When overtaking a bicyclist pass with care only when road and traffic conditions permit. Remember, SHARE THE ROAD!
Bicyclist's Role
As a cyclist you should always be on the alert for vehicular traffic, especially at intersections. Avoid the busiest roads when possible and ride with traffic, observing the same traffic laws as automobiles. Be sure to signal your intentions, with appropriate hand signals, when stopping and turning. Use bicycle lanes when they are provided and remember ALWAYS wear appropriate safety equipment, ESPECIALLY your HELMET! Head injuries are the leading cause of injury and death in bicycle/automobile accidents.
Our Role
The Tuscaloosa Police Department will continue to work with local cycling advocacy groups in a combined effort to improve bicycle safety. We will also enforce traffic laws that directly affect the safety of those on "two wheels." Our goal is to keep everyone who uses our roadways safe. With your help, we can make that goal a reality.
